"Bad Gateway"or "Service Unavailable"

This error is caused by Tomcat is not running. This can be caused by restarting Tomcat for planned maintenance or to cope with unexpected outages. Restarting Tomcat generally takes 1–2 minutes to complete.

We announce planned downtime on our Twitter account at http://twitter.com/websolr and generally report unplanned outages longer than a minute or two.

Why longer than a minute or two? Occasionally we will have a customer whose index discovers a new and novel way to crash Solr. In such cases, our monitoring software will automatically restart Tomcat as needed to maintain responsiveness. Such incidents are typically limited to one server, and we respond by isolating the problem index to its own server, and then working to find the root cause. We'll generally get in touch with you if we need to work with you to solve such an issue.
